More servicemen and women passed through New York than through any other American city. Some GIs visited on leave or en route to training camps. For others, New York was their last stop before embarking overseas. City residents strove to accommodate and entertain the troops, many of whom had never seen a big city, let alone a metropolis like New York. Times Square pulsed with record-breaking crowds. Nightclubs admitted GIs free of charge, but turned a handsome profit nonetheless, as New Yorkers—flush with paychecks from wartime jobs—packed the house. Numerous hotspots were whites-only.
